SEAMLESS INTERMODAL TRAVEL WITH A SINGLE PURCHASE: ITALO GROUP’S STRATEGY RECOGNISED ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE
Rome, 26 October 2026. Italo takes centre stage at the 2026 UIC Sustainability Impact Awards. For the second consecutive edition, the company has received recognition from the International Union of Railways (UIC) for its commitment to innovating and promoting sustainable transport.
Italo Group stood out for developing integrated solutions across its travel offering and sales systems, particularly in the field of intermodal and multimodal connections. This approach to shared and sustainable travel looks to the future and responds to the expectations of a new generation of passengers, who are increasingly focused on greener mobility solutions.
Italo offers high-speed rail services integrated with Itabus coaches. Itabus, a wholly owned company with a fleet of 100 coaches, enables the Group to serve not only major cities but also destinations with a strong tourism and industrial presence. Strategic transport hubs such as ports and airports can also be reached by purchasing the Group’s combined train + bus connections in a single transaction. The integrated network now covers more than 150 destinations across Italy.
Integration with Itabus is only one part of the offering. Through Italo’s website, passengers can also make a single purchase for journeys combining Italo high-speed services with regional trains, as well as for intermodal train + ferry solutions. Thanks to the agreement with SNAV, some of Italy’s main islands are connected to the Italo network. Passengers can also add services such as taxis, parking, luggage storage and more to their journey.
This commitment has been recognised by the UIC, which awarded Italo in Berlin during the latest edition of InnoTrans, acknowledging the company’s ability to deliver broad and measurable positive impacts. The recognition follows the award received in 2024 for the installation of defibrillators on board all Italo trains, making Italo the first railway operator in Italy to do so.
“We are delighted to have once again received this recognition at international level. This award is the result of teamwork and of our constant drive to innovate. We are always looking for solutions that anticipate the needs of our passengers. Today, we see shared mobility becoming increasingly important for travellers who place sustainability among their top criteria when choosing how to travel, and we can proudly say that we have been moving in this direction for years. The continuous development of our network and our intermodal offering is clear evidence of this commitment,” said Fabio Sgroi, Health & Safety Director at Italo.
