Rail Sustainability Index
Italo has been an Affiliate Member of the International Union of Railways (UIC – Union Internationale des Chemins de fer) since 2010. The UIC is an international industry organization whose mission is to promote rail transport worldwide and effectively address current and future challenges related to mobility and sustainable development.
As part of its participation in the UIC, the Company takes part in two Working Groups organized by the Association:
“Sustainability Platform”, dedicated to environmental sustainability. In particular, Italo contributes its expertise on energy efficiency and CO₂ emissions;
“Passage”, focused on rail accessibility for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, whose guidelines are integrated into the Company’s ESG governance framework.
In 2022, the UIC introduced the Rail Sustainability Index (RSi), a benchmarking tool that assesses sustainability performance within the rail transport sector, using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as its reference framework. The RSi is composed of a range of KPIs that enable progress monitoring against seven specific SDGs. The score achieved for each macro-category (SDG), normalized on a 100-point scale and weighted according to the relevance of the corresponding SDG, determines the SDG Score for that area. The sum of these scores results in the company’s overall RSi.
As a UIC member, Italo participated in the assessment in 2025 and confirmed a positive score of 71.70, showing an improvement compared to the previous year and significantly outperforming the industry average of 54.94. This progress was driven in particular by the Company’s performance in SDG 7, which recognizes achievements in energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources.
