OUR MISSION

Offer a high quality, accessible and innovative alternative, focused on passengers and the value of their time. We believe in safe, sustainable and state of the art mobility that can connect people and places.
ITALO INNOVATION AND DEVELOPMENT

In May 2023, with Luca Cordero di Montezemolo as chairman, Italo acquired Itabus S.p.A., a road transport company born in 2021, thus starting up a diffused rail and road system focused on going even beyond Italian borders. October 2023 saw a new beginning when MSC – the largest sea transport group – became the major shareholder, strengthening the vision of an always more connected, sustainable and future oriented mobility.
This evolution started on 28 April 2012, when Italo’s first train left Naples Central station: Alstom’s AGV575, the most modern train in Europe, marked the beginning of a rail revolution.
Since then, Italo has transformed Italy’s High-Speed travelling through competition, quality and a real choice for passengers.
The first line Naples-Rome-Milan, with Florence and Bologna was just the beginning.
Thanks to the intuitions of our shareholders and management, Italo increased its network, reaching strategic hubs like Roma Termini, Milano Centrale, Torino Porta Nuova and Verona Porta Nuova, and stopping in places like Salerno, Venice and Reggio Emilia.
2017 saw the coming into service of Italo EVO trains - an evolution of the Pendolino – bringing the fleet to 51 trains.
chi siamo 1
The 2020 pandemic put a great strain on the transportation sector. Italo reacted by investing in safety, becoming the first train in the world using HEPA filters the same as those used in planes, and improving our personnel’s training. The company also chose to expand in southern Italy, opening up in Calabria, Cilento, Puglia, Caserta and Benevento, and more recently in Genoa, thus connecting new strategic areas.

Nowadays, Italo has over 100 million passengers, 53 stations in 48 cities, 116 daily connections and a team of over 1400 employees. This success has made Italian high-speed trains an international model and Italo a case history for rail market deregulation.

Moreover, Italo’s story is a fully Italian adventure that started in 2006. An Italian portfolio, with Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, Diego Della Valle, Gianni Punzo e Giuseppe Sciarrone as founding members and a majority of Italian shareholders. An Italian mindset, thanks to the technicians who thought, planned and implemented it. An Italian heart where all young people can show their value through our trust, training and responsibility.

chi siamo 2
Being Italian is Italo’s trademark; the first company in Europe to start up a great project of innovation and development of the rail system, something we are all proud of. When Italy implemented the European directive on the deregulation of the sector, very few believed a private company could make it. Nonetheless, people, technologies, training, innovation, a new service model and a great passion have made the difference. The long start-up phase, which lasted almost six years, highlighted the determination of a group of shareholders who believed in competition and quality, investing over one billion euro of private capitals without any public support.
The people
